Chances are you’ve seen a brick wall or two in your lifetime, and recognized how sturdy and protective they can be against the elements. The brick can also be quite versatile. It can be featured in patio decorations, garden walls, or even the side of an apartment building. Plus, it takes very little effort to lay a brick well. All it takes is a few tools, some bricks and mortar, some water, and a patient hand. The first step is to be sure the place for the bricks is level. If the surface isn’t level, the end result will fall and topple over a period of time. The soil should be packed down, and not sloping at all. One of the most common choices is a hard packed soil as the base. . Once you have chosen your location, and leveled it, mark out the area for your bricks. The next tip is to dig out a few inches of soil, and verify that the new surface is level and compact as well. The next requirement is a frame for the brick wall. The frame is used to be sure the bricks and mortar are level and straight as you build your structure. Wooden boards, usually 2×4, can be used to line the length and breadth of your structure. Now you are required to pour some concrete to act as a base for your first bricks. This concrete will act as a foundation for your bricks, and is also different than the mortar material that will be used later.
Once the concrete is hardened, you can remove the frame work and prepare to lay your first brick. The first step is to mix together the mortar by following the directions provided. Remember to only mix up as much as you need for about thirty minutes of work.
Next, take a small amount of the mortar, and place it on the mortarboard. At this point, take a reasonable amount of mortar and coat the bottom of the brick. Put the brick into position, and tap lightly on the top of the brick. The mortar will extrude out on all size because of this. The following brick should be laid in basically the same way, just be sure that the ends are coated with mortar as well. A seal between the bricks will be created. Be sure to check the bricks for unevenness with the trowel and mortarboard. Once the row is completed, use the trowel to remove any excess mortar. That’s all it takes to lay down a layer of bricks for your wall. Then it’s simply a matter of repeitition, and making sure each layer is a half a brick off from the one below it.
